Mulch: Decomposing Empire | November 7th

Mulch and mulch making is life generating work on the farm and in the garden! In this Land Lesson, the good ground cover will be our teacher as we learn conservation, “recycling”, soil science, and how to unlock nutrients that are already there.

In this Land Lesson, participants will explore what mulch does on the micro level and how this agricultural practice applies to liberation work by teaching us how to be resourceful, patient, and letting things go that would be better off decomposing!

This Land Lesson will include a slideshow presentation and outdoor work of cutting grass or harvesting mulch material from the forest. Expect to use rakes, machetes, chainsaws, or shears.

This session begins at 10 AM Eastern Time for a four hour duration. The Harriet Tubman Freedom Farm is located in Rocky Mount, NC the address will be emailed upon completion of a liability waiver sent after registration. Please complete the waiver quickly to receive the address in advance of your travel.

What to bring:

- work gloves

- eye protection

- ear protection

- water

- layers

Refreshments and light snacks will be provided. Currently there is a composting toilet at the land, it is “outhouse style” A working sink and soap are available outside of the composting toilet.

This session will be facilitated in English. A portion of the session will be seated conversation style with a slide show presentation. The other part of the session will be hands on.
